Research interests
Research on vegetative propagation has a long tradition and has always been closely associated with collections of trees, shrubs and other plants, where studies of effects of climatic and soil conditions on plant growth and flowering are carried out. We have developed and put into practice new methods of propagation (from cuttings and by grafting) of important ornamental shrubs: lilacs, magnolias, azaleas, and rhododendrons. At present we conduct experiments on propagation of various trees and shrubs by means of tissue culture (so-called micropropagation). This method has given very good results for lilacs, rhododendrons, azaleas, and selected clones of polar and birch. We conduct research on somatic embryogenesis of selected coniferous trees species of the genera: Picea, Pinus and Abies. Beside micropropagation, we pursue experiments on the influence of some stress factors (e.g. toxic ions, high or low pH of the medium) on the development of roots and shoots of selected trees and shrubs. The experiments aim at selecting plants tolerant to unfavourable environmental conditions. Investigations are financed by Institute of Dendrology and Committee for Scientific Investigations.
Collaborative research
The Laboratory cooperates with various scientific institutions in Poland and abroad, including the Research Institute for Nursery Stock, Boskoop, Holland, and INRA Orleans Research Centre, Forestry Institute, France).
