About our interests:

In the Laboratory of Mycorrhizal Research several studies are conducted on ecto- and endomycorrhizal relationships in forest trees. The aim of our research is to describe the structure and dynamics of ectomycorrhizal fungi in coniferous and deciduous forests in order to illuminate their contribution in forest ecosystems. We study how mycorrhiza can be affected by different sources of anthropogenic pollution, and we attempt to identify and describe factors deleterious to the function of mycorrhizas and mycorrhizal fungi. Also, we try to describe how mycorrhiza react to different environmental disturbances and forestry practices and explain these reactions through physiological studies. At present, a major part of our research is focused on identifying fungal species in mycorrhizal root tips using DNA-based techniques (PCR-RFLP). We can thus begin the previously impossible task of characterizing the mycorrhiza community in nurseries, forest plantations and mature forests. In parallel, population studies are carried out in which mycorrhizal status of trees from different origin (provenances) are under investigation. Our applied projects are directed toward the potential use of selected mycorrhizal fungi in forestry.
