The library makes its collections available:

1. on the spot - the possibility to use the reading room's collection and the publications collected in the library warehouses for all interested parties
2. on reverses - only for employees and doctoral students of the Institute of Dendrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences
3. outside the Institute of Dendrology - only through interlibrary loans
4. at the computer station in the reading room of the Library
5. photocopies: for readers outside the Institute – paid service for more than 20 pages

Collections

The Library of the Institute of Dendrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences is the only one in Poland that specializes in collecting botanical and forestry literature and has the richest collection in this field - unique publications, old prints, sets of editions of valuable journals.

The Library collects specialized literature in the fields of dendrology, botany, tree physiology and genetics, forestry, ecology and environmental protection.

At present, the Library's collection consists of:

49 563 volumes of books and periodicals and special publications, including:

• 26 954 volumes of books
• 20 964 volumes of periodicals
• 1 645 volumes of special publications

In 2003, the Institute received a subsidy of PLN 80,000 from the Foundation for Polish Science as part of the MILAB program to subsidize the project "Modernization of premises and storage system for library collections - application of mobile shelving". Implementation of the project made it possible to place most of the collection in storage on one floor and gain space for expanding the book collection. A workstation for collection processing, documentation and duplication was also created.

The Library's reading room equipment has also been upgraded.

Catalogs

The computer catalog of the library's collection in the Micro CDS ISIS system contains more than 7,700 records of bibliographic descriptions of books and more than 500 records of bibliographic descriptions of journal titles and resources. The catalog is supplemented on an ongoing basis and is available only at the computer station in the Library's reading room.

The traditional card catalog covers the entire collection of compact and continuous publications up to 1995 (continued in the computer catalog).

The beginnings of the Library's collection are connected with the activity of Jan Dzialynski, who already in the second half of the 19th century collected a professional dendrological and botanical book collection, first in Paris, later in Gołuchow and Kórnik. A large part of it is now in the collection of the Library of the Institute of Dendrology, and these are very valuable, unique items, often with marginalia, such as:

• Browne D.J., 1846. The trees of America; native and foreign, pictorially and botanically delineated... Harper & Brothers, New York (ref. 048, A-69) or
  
• Carriere E.-A., 1867. Traité général des coniferes ou description de toutes les especes de ce ganres aujourd'hui connues... nouvelle edition, I-II. Chez l'auteur, Paris (ref. 4054, A-272).

In 1926, Antoni Wróblewski assumed the position of Director of the Kórnik Gardens of the Zakłady Kórnickie Foundation and, carrying out work on the introduction and acclimatization of trees and shrubs, transformed the neglected park in Kórnik into a modern arboretum, while continuing to accumulate a professional book collection. The library is enriched with all valuable dendrological works published in North America and Europe between the wars, especially keys, encyclopedic works, periodicals. Thanks to this, the Kórnik Arboretum becomes the most important center of dendrological knowledge in Poland in a relatively short time. Antoni Wróblewski, like Jan Dzialynski, had the habit of making notes on the margins of many books, especially plant lists, treating them as inventories of the Kórnik arboretum, which makes them of exceptional importance today.

After the war, the entire surviving book collection, consisting of about a thousand items, was placed under the care of Professor Stefan Białobok, Director of the Department of Dendrology and Pomology, which was incorporated in 1952 into the then established Polish Academy of Sciences. The library was one of the auxiliary departments of the Department, which changed its name first to the Department of Dendrology and the Kórnik Arboretum, and eventually to the Institute of Dendrology. Both Prof. Stefan Bialobok and Prof. Kazimierz Browicz, who as the Institute's Director of Scientific Affairs was the direct custodian of the Library, rendered special service to the Library in its post-war history. Thanks to their extensive scientific contacts in the world, the Library owes its rapid development, the expansion of the book collection through thoughtful purchases, and the accumulation of nearly 250 titles of Polish and 900 foreign journals, obtained from subscriptions and exchanges conducted with numerous research institutions around the world.

Open Resources in the Digital Repository of Scientific Institutes - OZwRCIN

The Institute of Dendrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences implemented the "Open Resources in the Digital Repository of Scientific Institutes - OZwRCIN" project, which was a continuation of the RCIN project. The project received funding from the Digital Poland Operational Program of the European Union under Measure 2.3 "Digital accessibility and usability of the public sector", Sub-measure 2.3.1 "Digital provision of public sector information from administrative sources and science resources" (type II of the project: digital provision of science resources).

The project was implemented by a consortium of 16 scientific institutes (including the Institute of Dendrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences), whose leading partner was the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw.

The aim of the project was to increase the availability and use of scientific resources of the Institute of Dendrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences by digitizing them and depositing them in an open access repository.

During the implementation of the project, the RCIN Platform was modernized, where scientific, library and herbarium resources as well as research data are made publicly available in open access. Specialized digitization equipment was purchased and work was carried out to adapt the existing infrastructure to the needs of the project.

The total value of funding for the project is PLN 34,684,818.25, including PLN 2,624,031.50 for the Institute of Dendrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The collection of objects of the Institute of Dendrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences is exceptionally diverse: in addition to typical publications (publishing series, articles and diploma theses), it also contains documentation of scientific activities (research data, descriptions of provenance experiments, archives of botanical expeditions), a collection of herbarium specimens and photographic documentation of natural objects of our Arboretum.
