Characteristics: | Tree with a broad, branching crown. The bark stays smooth and gray, only in older individuals cracks begin to appear. Leaves grow to 22 cm in length and have 3 to 5 pairs of acute lobes. In autumn, the leaves turn red brown. The acorns are rounded with a flat base on a shallow cup. They ripen only in the second year's autumn. Northern Red Oak is the most widespread alien oak species in Poland. It gained in popularity due to its fast growth, low soil requirements, frost and air pollution resistance. | |
Additional information: | In Europe, the Northern Red Oak has been planted since the beginning of the 18th century. Its leaf motif, despite being of American origin, can be seen on the reverse of Polish coins. |
