Research focus:

In my scientific work, I study plant ecology, especially plant interactions with soil microorganisms. I am also interested in rare and understudied species, their biogeography, and conservation.

One of my main interests is linden trees (Tilia) and related genera (subfamily Tilioideae). During my doctoral studies at the University of Tokyo, I worked on characterizing the ectomycorrhizal fungal communities associated with endemic lindens in temperate and subtropical forests of Japan, with an emphasis on identifying fungi that preferentially associate with lindens. Currently, I am investigating the soil ecology of tropical Tilioideae tree genera, Craigia and Mortoniodendron. In the future, I plan to look more broadly at the role of linden trees in European and Asian forests, especially in the context of ongoing climate change. Another of my major interests is ectomycorrhiza in unusual environmental contexts. Examples include tropical forests, nutrient-rich soils, and non-tree ectomycorrhizal plant hosts.

In addition, I am interested in the relationship between people and trees - public awareness of trees and forests, the role of trees in culture, their contemporary and historical use, and citizen science.
