Research focus:
My interests have, from the very beginning, been closely linked with plants, their variability, and the ways in which their (bio)diversity is described. I started with floristic studies but soon turned my attention to systematic analyses and the micromorphology of leaves and stems. I was particularly interested in whether the wax layer might provide characters useful in systematics. I am drawn to the interface between morphology and taxonomy – the point at which detailed microscopic observation helps to clarify species boundaries. In this way, I combine a traditional descriptive approach with more modern methods of analysis.
Over time, I have come to place increasing emphasis on scientific collections. To me, herbaria are not only collections of plants but also the very foundation on which the whole systematics rests. This is why I engage in work related to the digitisation of collections and in reflecting on how data sharing can support research, as well as what the history of collections reveals about the practice of botany.
At the same time, I try to popularise knowledge about plants and about science itself. I aim to show that what seems invisible at first sight plays a crucial role in the life of plants and in the work of the researcher. I seek to combine classical systematic research with reflection on the role of science and its resources.
