“The nature of change... with botany into the future”. This year's (already sixtieth) Congress of the Polish Botanical Society was held under this guiding theme, bringing us into the next centenary year of the Society. It was also an occasion to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Silesian Branch of the PTB. Katowice hosted us with hot weather. I wonder if it was as hot in 1989, when the 48th PTB Congress was just held in Katowice?
The main organizers of the Congress were the Polish Botanical Society, the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Silesian Medical University in Katowice. On the first day of the Congress, the PTB General Board meeting and the 69th PTB General Meeting of Delegates were held. On the second day of the Congress, we had the opportunity to hear introductory papers in two plenary sessions: “The world of plants - the nature of change” and “The past, present and future of botany”. We were extremely impressed by the performance of the Song and Dance Ensemble “Silesia” - a wonderful folk group, founded in 1953. On Tuesday afternoon, the interdisciplinary sessions began, and we finished them on Wednesday late in the evening. And on Tuesday evening, we continued our botanical discussions at a gala dinner (“Gyburstag”). A great attraction of the PTB Congress was also the numerous field sessions, which allowed us to learn about the plant cover of not only Upper Silesia.
It was a wonderful time! This year's Congress of the Polish Botanical Society was attended by 27 people from our Institute, including seven of our doctoral students (Sebastian Bury, Klaudia Jopek, Martyna Lasek, Dominika Robak, Anita Rzadkiewicz, Tomasz Sobczak and Magdalena Terlecka).
The next PTB Convention is to be held in Wroclaw, Poland....
