RESEARCH TOPICS

The Department of Biogeography and Systematics of the Institute of Dendrology, Polish Academy of Sciences, conducts research on the geographic distribution, diversity and evolution of woody plants, with a particular focus on Europe and the Mediterranean Basin area. Systematic and biogeographic studies allow us to better understand the processes underlying the geographic range of species and their adaptability in changing environmental conditions.

Population genetics of woody plants has been one of our core areas of research, helping us to analyse genetic structures of populations and identify speciation mechanisms. Our scientists use molecular taxonomy to investigate phylogenetic relationships between tree and shrub species, facilitating a more accurate classification of these species and a better understanding of their evolutionary history.

Another major area of research involves the phylogeography of woody-plant species. It combines genetic data with geographic distribution analyses to reconstruct past migration routes and geographic-reach changes. These studies are critical to understanding how climate changes impact on forest ecosystems, and they play a key role in preserving genetic diversity.

What is more, the Department conducts research on the micromorphology of above-ground parts of plants to identify small anatomical features of potential systematic and ecological relevance. These analyses are supported through the use of the latest microscopic and digital-imaging methods.

Another noteworthy aspect of our research relates to molecular methods used in investigating the biogeography and ecology of non-pathogenic foreign fungi. Using these methods, we can determine how non-pathogenic foreign fungi influence forest ecosystems and potentially interact with host plants.

The task of our Department is also to model the biogeographic range of forest trees and shrubs with a view to predicting changes in their distribution due to environmental factors, including climate change. These models provide an important tool to develop strategies on how to preserve forest species and ecosystems.

The research conducted by the Department of Biogeography and Systematics has been providing new insights into biogeographic, evolutionary and ecological processes that are critical to preserving biodiversity and managing forest ecosystems.

Key words:
plant biogeography, tree and shrub systematics, population genetics, molecular taxonomy, phylogeography of tree species, micromorphology of plants, foreign fungi, molecular methods in ecology, plant range modelling, ecology of European and Mediterranean forests, impact of climate change on plant distribution
